Free Solo: An Outstanding Documentary

Free Solo: An Outstanding Documentary

Alex Honnold is a mountain climber about to take on his career's most difficult feat: climbing the Yosemite's 3000 rock face El Capitan without any appliances or assistance. However, his preparation is interrupted when he falls in love with a new girlfriend, Sanni. What sort of person looks up at Mount Yosemite and thinks, "I'm going to climb this thing without a rope." Even Captain James, who attempted the same thing, survived because Spock was close by a pair of anti-gravity boots. That's the first question to pop into your head concerning Alex Honnold's attempt at the holy grail of mountain climbing. His training and preparation for this challenge is the focal point of this documentary, written by climber Jimmy Chin and producer Elizabeth Chai Varsaheyli.

The couple is very close to Alex Honnold, which usually causes concerns about the documentary's objectivity. However, in this movie, the fear for his well-being tinted the story in a way that only increases the tension without skimping on Alex's flaws and minor mistakes. As Alex attempts this feat, he keeps asking himself, "why am I doing this, and more importantly, why am I doing this when I've just fallen in love?" He's a very witty and complex character that viewers can't help but love. This movie is an amazing story of a man who decided to brave the impossible.
