Black Widow Director Explains Why The Movie Needed To Poke Fun At Scarlett Johansson’s Famous Fighting Pose

Black Widow Director Explains Why The Movie Needed To Poke Fun At Scarlett Johansson’s Famous Fighting Pose

The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase Four has officially begun with episodes on Disney+, but Cate Shortland's Black Widow will bring the franchise back to theaters. Fans are excited to see Scarlett Johansson take center stage in the long-awaited film, despite Florence Pugh's character Yelena mocking Natasha's characteristic action pose. However, it turns out that Black Widow has more to say regarding this narrative point.

Black Widow is a one-of-a-kind film, as it will undoubtedly provide closure to fans after the character's death in Avengers: Endgame. While exploring Natasha's dark past, the film will also explore how the character has been portrayed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the past. Director Cate Shortland addressed the jokes about Nat's fighting position in Black Widow during a chat with CinemaBlend's own Sean O'Connell (as seen in the video above), saying: “That joke comes from the idea that in previous films perhaps Scarlett has had to be a bit more of an object. So even when she was fighting, there was this idea of showing. And that was what we wanted to take out of this film. So when gave that line to Florence to point the figure at the idea that sometimes some of the stuff she’d done before was perhaps for the audience. And now we want to say ‘This is much more visceral. And it’s going to get dirty.”
